When I interviewed Derek Rutherford, the Director of the Institute of
Alcohol Studies a couple of years ago, he told me that the UK Temperance
Alliance was set up as a charity in 1938 in order to carry out the
educational work of the UK Alliance. Its remit was to inform the public and
decision-makers about the problems related to alcohol abuse. As time went
on, however, it simply became a trust that made grants and managed funds.
When Derek Rutherford joined the UK Temperance Alliance in 1982 he was
instrumental in setting up the Institute of Alcohol Studies as the means by
which the UK Temperance Alliance could carry out its work, as an instrument
of influencing public policy, etc.
