The New York Times and the International Herald Tribune feature a St.
Patrick's Day article (by Brian Lavery) on the new sensitivity in Ireland
to the drink problem there. In 2003 bar sales fell and until recently the
Irish drank less than most other Europeans, but during the years 1989-2001
Ireland experienced a staggering 49% increase in per capita
consumption. Most 15 to 17-year-old drink (illegally), often eight drinks
on a "good" night out.
