There is an article in the International Herald Tribune (apparently New
York Times too), 6 Aug. 04, by Steven Lee Myers, "What Ales Russia? Beer,
Duma Says," about a new concern about beer drinking (not just the better
known Russian vodka habit). Politicians urge restrictions on the
advertising of beer. In Russia beer often is considered similar to a soft
drink, a beverage that can be consumed without a thought in the morning or
on a street. "Per capita consumption of beer has doubled by volume since
1998, when it was more or less equal to other vodka and hard liquors,
reaching 52.5 liters last year."
