The Blue Badge of Courage:
Stephen Crane and the Temperance Movement

George Monteiro
Brown University

Friday, November 19, 1999, at 4:30 p.m.
Elmarion Room, Goddard-Daniels House, 190 Salisbury Street,
Worcester, Massachusetts

Precis: Stephen Crane's parents, especially his mother, were
active in the temperance movement. For the last twenty years of
her life Helen Crane worked with the WCTU, nationally and
locally. As a child Crane was exposed to the melodramatic
narratives and highly charged rhetoric of the temperance worker.
This exposure had significant and identifiable consequences for
the young writer's choice of subjects, his views of human
responsibility, and his very style as a journalist, poet, and
writer of fiction.

Refreshments will be provided during the discussion of the paper.
Afterwards, a supper, with wine, will be served in the dining
room of the Goddard-Daniels House at $13.00 per person. The
entree will be seafood newburg. If you wish to stay for supper,
please send your check in that amount to arrive at AAS by
Wednesday, November 17. The Society regrets that it is unable to
make refunds for dinner after that date.
