List members may be interested in a new, well-illustrated and cheap book
about friendly and fraternal societies regalia. It's written by Victoria
Solt Dennis and it's called "Discovering friendly and fraternal
societies: their badges and regalia". The publisher is Shire Books (see
www.shirebooks.co.uk ). ISBN is 0747806284 and the price is GBP
10.99. It has 160 pages.

It has a chapter on temperance orders which covers the Rechabites; the
Sons and Sisters of the Phoenix; the Sons of Temperance; and the
Independent Order of Good Templars. The book also deals with Freemasons,
Oddfellows, RAO Buffaloes, Druids, and other orders. There's a neat
bibliography and further (largely British) research sources are cited,
including the Open University's Friendly Societies Research Group
(www.open.ac.uk/socialsciences/frsg).

I'm often asked by family historians about temperance medals and
regalia. This guide looks very useful for dealing with these queries. I
now know that PCN means "Past Chief Noble" in the Sons of the Phoenix.
