I've come across another claim that the ancients recognized FAS. Paolo
Nencini says there's a reference in Plato. See "The Rules of Drug Taking:
Wine and Poppy Derivatives in the Ancient World, Part 2." Substance Use
and Misuse, 32(2) 1997, pp. 211-217.

Here's the passage from Plato: "When drunk, a man is clumsy and bad at
sowing seed, and is thus likely to beget unstable and untrusty offspring,
crooked in form and character." The Laws VI, 775c, translated by R. G.
Bury (Loeb Classical Library, Vol. 1), p. 469.
