There is a considerable amount of discussion in classical antiquity
devoted to drinking and intoxication and its consequences, and the
observations of ancient writers, Plato and others, notably Pliny the
Elder and Seneca ("the Younger"), often foreshadow what we know
clinically today. But Ms. Golden and Mr. Courtwright are right to point
out the dangers of retroactive diagnostics, however alluring it may at
times be.
