Re Nancy GARNER query on Demorest medals; these were named for William
Demorest, a prohibitionist, WCTU benefactor, and husband of a WCTU member
(can't recall her name off hand but should be in the Standard Encyclopedia
of the Alcohol Problem). The medals were for recitation contests for
children, and based on temperance material of course. They are discussed in
the WCTU printed reports. They even had such contests in Australia.  I
mention the contests in Woman's World/Woman's Empire
