Sorry for the *very* belated reply - I've only just found this list.  
Anyway, there is an interesting discussion of Quaker attitudes to 
temperance in Basil Montagu's 'Some Enquiries into the Effects of 
Fermented Liquors'.  Montagu seems to base his argument on the discussion 
of drinking in Thomas Clarkson's 'Portraiture of Quakerism'. Interestingly 
for a book written in 1814, Montagu objects to the Quaker rule requiring 
moderation rather than total abstinence.
