> The Department of History is establishing a Research Centre for the
> History of Food and Drink. The Research Centre's activities will
> embrace the history of food and drink in both an Australian and a
> global context. It will examine the history of food and drink in the
> various stages from their production to consumption, in their
> relationship to national and international politics, society, and
> economy, and in their environmental and medical effects and cultural
> meanings.

> The purpose of the Research Centre is to promote:

> collaborative, interdisciplinary, and cross-institutional

> * Community awareness of the importance of the history of food and
> drink to an understanding of economy, society, and culture.

> The Research Centre's activities will include:

> * Attracting grants and supporting the grant applications of
> members of the Research Centre.
> * Hosting conferences, seminars, public lectures, exhibitions, and

> * Teaching subjects and encouraging students to undertake theses
> and dissertations on the history of food and drink.
> * Establishing a journal, a monograph series, and a web site.
> * Developing library resources in the history of food and drink,
> and promoting the use of those already on hand, such as the State
> Library's wine collection.
> * Undertaking consultancy and commissioned work for the public and
> private sectors.
> * Becoming the umbrella organisation for research in the history of
> food and drink for South Australia, attracting members from other
> disciplines, other tertiary institutions, public agencies, and
> private individuals.

> drink, but we realise that many people without such research interests
> have a general interest in the topic and would hence appreciate the
