The Globe (issue 2, 1998), pp. 20-21, in the article "India's Alcohol
Nightmare," discusses the end of the brief prohibition experiment in
the state of Haryana (formerly part of the Punjab). Under pressure
from women, this harddrinking state closed its government-run and
privately owned drink sellers on April 1, 1996. As a result of the
loss of excise duties, illegal drink sales and related corruption,
Haryana resumed legal sale of alcoholic beverages on April 1, 1998.
Another Indian state which has abandoned prohibition is Andhra
Pradesh.
