Call for Paper for the 1999 OAH in Washington, DC

We need a third paper (plus a chair and commentator) for a panel entitled
"Urban Prohibitions: Social Control in Turn-of-the-Century City." It will
be grouped with papers on the movements to curb handguns and smoking.
Possible paper topics include efforts to curb public assembly, limit free
speech, or eliminate vices such as boxing, gambling, and prostitution.
This is by no means an exhaustive list of possibilities. We panel is
designed to give the broadest possible meaning to the term "prohibition."
Ideally, this third paper would not focus exclusively on New York City as
one of the papers already does.

Send a one page proposal and c.v. as soon as possible -- we need to make
the January 12 deadline.

Thank you.
