our library just acquired this book:
Peter Thompson, _Rum, Punch, and Revolution: Taverngoing and Public Life
in Eighteenth-Century Philadelphia_ (Philadelphia: University of
Pennsylvania Press, 1999).
looks great. back cover says thompson is Sydney Mayer Lecturer in Early
American History at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of St. Cross
College.
