I don't know if the news has reached the States yet, but here in Britain
the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists has just published
its first guidelines on drinking in pregnancy, in which it states that
there is no evidence that drinking harms the foetus at levels of up to 15
units a week (which happens to be the same as the maximum safe recommended
drinking level for non-pregnant women. In Britain, by the way, a unit is 8
grams of alcohol.) This report has attracted considerable publicity, for
the reasons one might suspect.
