I am attempting to design an upper-level undergrad class that examines a variety of 19th Century Temperance movements from a comparative point of view, with some attempt to address issues of transatlantic culture and the interplay between "international" ideologies and local circumstances. I wonder what works, (articles or monographs) particularly recent ones, people on the list might suggest I take a closer look at. I can think of a few to begin with--James Roberts on Temperance in Germany, Brian Harrison on Temperance in Victorian England, Quinn, Bretherton and Colm Kerrigan on Ireland, and of course the Susanna Barrows and Robin Room collection (Drinking: Behavior and Belief...). I would also consider Norman Longmate (The Waterdrinkers) to be useful...

I would be happy to hear other suggestions, on or off list...
