"Club teaches fine points of drinking" – Associated Press (Williamsburg,
Va.), Nov. 9, 1999
"Mixing martinis, throwing cocktail parties and choosing a good bottle
of wine are just a few
of topics discussed at meetings of a new club at the College of
William & Mary. The ‘Spirits
of William & Mary,’ unofficially called the ‘Drinking Society,’ was
started this year to convey
appreciation of the finer aspects of alcohol to students, according to
club organizer Tim
Wittig. Wittig, 21, believes if students know more about drinking,
they’ll enjoy it more and
abuse it less." Witting denies in the article that he formed the group
to have a reason to drink,
but says he didn’t form the group to stop alcohol abuse either. The
article also says that during
the last two years, Virginia colleges, including William & Mary, have
been involved in a
concerted effort to curb student drinking. The move came after five
Virginia college students
died in alcohol-related incidents.
