The Journal of the American Temperance Union is the best temperance periodical
that I've seen for the late 1830's and early 1840's in the U. S.

In Philadelphia, the Journal of the American Temperance Union can be found
at the Rare Book Room, Van Pelt Library, at the University of Pennsylvania.

The Library Company of Philadelphia has brief runs of the Cold Water
Magazine and Temperance Monitor for the late 1830's and 1840's. Both
contain national temperance news as well.

The Public Ledger, a leading Philadelphia newspaper, paid close attention to
the temperance movement in Philadelphia and published temperance speeches,
poetry and songs, some brief temperance fiction, reports of meetings of the
Pennsylvania state temperance society, notices of various kinds of temperance
festivals, and descriptions of temperance rituals, banners, and parades. Even
though it's a local newspaper, the Public Ledger would be a useful souce
in studying the national temperance movement during the 1840's.
