Dear Professor Powell,

Alan Taylor's article "The Art of Hook and Snivery" discusses the role of
alcohol in local elections during the same period as Rorbaugh's work.  I
believe the article was in the Journal of the Early Republic, but I'm
afraid I don't have a copy of the article nearby, so the reference is just
off the top of my head.  It's a very interesting topic!
