Salsa Picante with Rice and Beans! Celebrate and sample Caribbean music,
dance and food. Wednesday, January 18 at 5:30 p.m. in MMH 212

Latin American dance music has become a part of mainstream American
culture, but where does it come from? What are its roots? What makes it
Latin American? How can we judge its “Latin American-ness?” A
presentation by ethnomusicologist Thomas Garcia focuses on some of the
most important Latin dance forms *Mambo, Salsa, Son, Danzón, Rumba,
Merengue* and seeks to explain the origins and influences that drove the
development of these genres, including issues and influences such as race
and slavery, African religious and dance music, European melody, harmony
and instruments, Spanish Colonial and indigenous cultures, revolution and
resolution, migration and immigration, all combining to create exciting
musical and dance traditions. Through musical examples and images, these
issues and this music will be explored. Included in the presentation is
a live dance demonstration by Alexandra Anaya, an accomplished dancer and
Latin dance teacher, and a full Cuban meal of fried Cuban sandwiches,
pork carnita with fried yuca and plantains, ropa vieja over white rice,
moros y cristianos, with virgin cocktails, mojitos, and pina coladas.

The program is an educational warm-up event for the Friday, February 3,
Latin Night Tiempo Libre Latin Dance Hall Extravaganza! Tiempo Libre was
Grammy 2005 Nominated to Best Salsa/Merengue Album for Arroz con Mango,
7:30 p.m. Millett Hall (Oxford campus). (Tiempo Liebre CDs will be
distributed at the January 18 program). For more information, please call
the Center for American and World Cultures, 9-8309 or visit the website,
