While at first it is hard to determine why Dr. Faustus has chosen
magic over all the other disciplines including medicine, law, and
logic, which are very prestigious. While our class first debated that
he was just bored with the the other professions and thought magic
would be the most fun. This came to be untrue. It seems as if Dr.
Faustus is not bored, but is more afraid of the idea of death to the
point where he does not want to experience it at all, and magic is the
only way to get around death. He is so feared by death that he even
decides to sell his soul to Lucifer in order to learn the "black
magic" so he can trick life.
