Many thanks for sharing this article. The term which is very often
used to refer to the Roma and their language is "Romani". "Romanian"
refers to the nationals of Romania. Many Romanians are angry that the
two words are so similar and in 2010 the Romanian government even
wanted to change the official name of the Roma to "Tigan"
http://content.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,2035862,00.html -
yet another sign of very negative attitudes towards the Roma in
Europe. A very large Roma minority lives in Romania; they were
actually enslaved until the years 1855-6, and the Romanian
abolitionist movement was inspired by the American one (a very good
book on the history of the Romanian Roma is Viorel Achim's "The Roma
in Romanian History", Budapest: Central European University Press,
2004).
