Dear Eric, et al.,

Are you sure 2012-3 isn't a mistake on her mother's  part? Actually, to my great surprise, this poet is of some real interest: professional competence and intelligence on a subject matter rarely addressed. It could be of value to our students to have her come here: she'd bring a new perspective on some things of this world. An unusual programming might be worked around her visit. She'd possibly have something to offer other programs, like Jewish Studies.  I'd be very interested in seeing her book, at least. But, what would she be asking?

Dear Professor Goodman:

I am writing to inquire about the possibility of programming Jehanne Dubrow for a poetry reading at Miami University during the 2012-2013 academic year.  I am the manager and press agent for my daughter Jehanne and would like to acquaint your creative writing students and faculty with her work. Jehanne is a poet, essayist, academic, and a military spouse.

Jehanne's third poetry collection, Stateside (Northwestern UP 2010), with a foreword by former U.S. Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize Winner Ted Kooser, examines her experiences as a "milspouse" - a Navy wife - looking at the before, during and after of a deployment. Although the soldier-poet has long been a recognized presence in literature, the military wife represents an entirely new voice in the poetry of war. The last military wife to be portrayed fully in poetry was Penelope in "The Odyssey", which was over 2,000 years ago!  With Stateside, Jehanne hopes to expand poetry's depiction of war to include a modern feminine viewpoint of what it means to be "married to the military".

There is considerable interest in Jehanne's work in the military and civilian communities and in scholarly circles. Jehanne has discussed and read selections from the book at the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, the Naval War College, the U.S. Department of State, the West Chester Poetry Center, the Sewanee Writers' Conference, and at a number of universities. Stateside is also being taught at the Naval Academy and other colleges.

Stateside has been featured on NPR's Fresh Air, the PBS NewsHour "Art Beat" Blog, Poetry Daily, the Academy of American Poets website, and at the Academy of American Poets Summer Reading Series in Central Park in New York City. The Virginian-Pilot, Stars and Stripes, and Government Executive have published feature stories on Jehanne, the book, and her writing workshops for military veterans.

Most recently, Stateside was winner of the 2011 Society of Midland Authors Award in Poetry and the 2010 Los Angeles Book Festival Award in Poetry.  It was also named a 2010 ForeWord Book of the Year Finalist in Poetry.
