Brian,

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. I missed the first post.

Anyhow I've got a couple of points to make, so please bear with me.

1) Any form of SLIP/PPP/TIA/SLIPKNOT/etc is not supported on any of
the Applied Science systems. In fact, is it often discouraged because
most of these programs are poorly written and tend to cause system
problems with hung connections and processes that never die.

    Just a warning.

2) The Gandalf does not provide 8-bit clean connections, through TCP/IP.
It does provide 8-bit clean connections through serial lines,
    like the class MIAVX1.

3) The Gandalf does provide both 8-bit and 7-bit connections.
8-bit connections come through if you hit ; instead of RETURN
    after getting a CONNECTED prompt.

Zmodem requires an 8-bit connection, but doesn't care if it's a
clean connection. It has all kinds of error correction and recovery
built into it. Zmodem was designed for hostile environments like
    TCP/IP.

The whole problem here is TCP/IP. TCP/IP is a packet oriented transmission
protocol. That means that you get bursts of packets that are re-assembled
at the destination. Zmodem would really like a serial line, where the data
flow is continuous and uninterrupted. SLIP/PPP/TIA/SLIPKNOT/etc all require
a serial line connection to operate at peak efficiency. They need that
continuous data flow.

Hope this helped.
