We have good news and bad news to report on the PPP front:

On the good side, our networking group is testing a new version of
dial-in router software that appears to improve the autosensing/PAP
authentication. This may make using the terminal window unnecessary
(for those who have found it their only way to connect successfully).

The bad news is that authentication itself has failed much of the time
for many most of the weekend (resulting in "Access Denied" from the
terminal window). We don't at this point know the cause of the
problem, but it is being investigated.

Meanwhile, the alternatives are our old text-based connections:
Kermit is our old standby, and many Windows95 users have been
successful with Hyperterminal. Here are some hints on using Windows
95 HyperTerminal to reach MIAMIU and MIAVX1:

Setting up your icon:

1. Start HyperTerminal by clicking on
Start/Programs/Accessories/HyperTerminal.
2. Double-click on the Hypertrm.exe icon, and it will open a New
Connection dialog box.
3. Name your connection something like ³Miami Systems² and choose an
icon for it. Click OK.
4. In the Phone Number box, enter the phone number as you would dial
the MU number 529-4999 or 529-2161 (if you are living on campus enter
9 instead of 529). Check to see that your modem has been entered
properly. Click OK.
5. In the Connect box, click the Modify button. In the Properties
box, click the Configure button, choose the Connection tab, and change
the settings to 7 data bits, even parity, 1 stop bit. Click OK, and
click OK again.
6. You may, if you want, choose a font: Cancel the Connect box, and
then on the pull-down menu under View on the menu bar, click Font, and
indicate your choices.

Using Your Connection

1. From the Connect box, click on Dial. (The phone icon will
generate this Connect box.)
2. You should hear dialing and negotiation. When you get a cursor,
press ENTER.
3. You will be asked to type a for MIAMIU or v1 for MIAVX1.
4. If you are choosing MIAMIU, you may need to press ENTER, and you
will be asked to enter your terminal type, vt100. Press ENTER.
5. Log on as normal.
6. If you are choosing MIAVX1, you may see a few extra characters at
the $ prompt. Erase them and go on.
7.  Function keys:  For F1, use ESC, then the 1 key;
For F2, use ESC, then the 2 key; etc.
For CLEAR on MIAMIU, use the numeric keypad¹s ENTER key.
8. When done, log off as normal. Click on the disconnect icon to
break your telephone connection.

If you are having trouble with these steps, or if you have suggestions
to improve this process, please contact the Help Desk, 529-7900.
