PPP/Netscape problems

Whenever I open netscape while a ppp connection is active the connection
goes dead.  I can have netscape open when i connect, or even have netscape
open the connection and there are no problems.  I do have another
(internet) program open when I'm opening netscape, if that makes a
difference.  Here is what I'm using, for the record:
Motorola 28.8K bps modem
Free PPP
All the regular Internet utils with which a mac comes
a StarMax 3000/160 PPC mac clone
 
Can anybody help?
