The ponds had some small groups of ducks but the most interesting thing for me was watching two Sandhill Cranes in the pond by the blind. They were in water as high as their legs and they were bathing for several minutes. They even put their heads under the water as well as lowering their bodies into the water.
I’ve seen Sandhills at Whitewater Draw in AZ bathe but in shallower water where they actually lay down and rolled over but I don’t think I’ve seen them do this in deep water.
Much fluffing and shaking of feathers then one walked to solid ground, stretched its wings out briefly then disappeared behind some vegetation. The other crane joined up shortly afterwards. V cool.
Ducks: gadwall, Ring-necked, N Shoveler, mallard, Black Duck, Redhead, Bufflehead, Blue-winged Teal. Coots. Hooded Mergs. Mute Swans. Canada Geese.
2 ad Bald Eagles, one on the nest, the other perched a few trees away.
