While hunting for migrants I found a juvenile Little Blue Heron at 3-Creeks MetroPark in far south Columbus this morning. It was in a drying pond along the main bikepath just south of Williams Rd and I-270. The low water levels had attracted a good number of waders, including
60 Great Egrets
7 Great Blue Herons
1 Green Heron
1 Little Blue Heron
Even with the large number of Great Egrets, the smaller LBH stood out. With all these herons jammed into less than 2 acres of shallow water, it looked more like the Everglades than central Ohio. I don't know if the later rains today and tonight might raise the water level sufficiently to disperse this crowd. The pond had acres of mudflats as well, which had attracted some Kildeer, 1 Lesser Yellowlegs, 1 Solitary Sandpiper, and 2 Least Sandpipers. The spot can best be reached by parking at the Madison Mills parking lot along Williams Rd (just west of the Heron Pond entrance) and walking the bikepath south under the I-270. The pond is about 100 yards south of the freeway.
