Another exciting Friday evening, counting robins in my back fields.
In the midst of the tally, a northern shrike flew into a nearby tree by the
power lines, perched briefly on the top branch (just long enuf for a diagnostic
photo) and quickly flew down into the bushes to roost for the night. He had
lots of company…..at least 700 robins descended into the fields to roost.
I think the robin tally was on the low side…after seeing the shrike, I didn’t move
on to a better viewing point for counting the robins, who arrive from three
different directions, making it a challenge to get an accurate count.
Most years, when a shrike shows up in my fields, it will soon be seen at nearby
Frohring Meadows.
