JUNE 02, 2017 - CUYAHOGA VALLEY MONTHLY TOWPATH TRAIL CENSUS.
ROUTE: Red Lock Trailhead to Merriman Valley, including Trail Mix in
Peninsula and Szalay's Farm Market.
TIME: 6:00am - 3:00pm  TEMP.: 49 ~ 77  COND.: Cool and foggy early, giving
way to sunny, blue skies, and pleasant; light south winds.
TRAIL COND.: Good.  RIVER COND.: High, swift, and muddy - little or no
exposed rock and sandbars.
FT.MI.: 13.63  OBS.: John Henry & Douglas W. Vogus.

I. MAMMALS: 7 SPECIES.

   1. Eastern Cottontail - 1
   2. Eastern Chipmunk - 38
   3. Woodchuck - 1
   4. Eastern Gray Squirrel - 1
   5. Eastern Fox Squirrel - 1
   6. Red Squirrel - 15
   7. White-tailed Deer - 10 (2 bucks,7 does,1 heard snorting)


II. BIRDS: 74 SPECIES, 1,014 INDIVIDUALS.
(NOTE: m = male; f = female; ? = bird was seen but not sexed; * = bird was
heard calling but not seen)

   1. Canada Goose - 76 (4 goslings)
   2. Wood Duck - 16 (2m,4f,10 ducklings)
   3. Mallard - 2 (1m,1f)
   4. Common Merganser - 2 (1f,1 duckling - seen from Towpath Trail bridge
   at Furnace Run; duckling was only days old - First June Record on Census)
   5. Wild Turkey - 8 (1 hen,7 poults - seen in Szalay's corn field north
   of Bolanz Rd.; poults not much bigger than a baseball - First June Record
   on Census)

   68. Rose-breasted Grosbeak - 12 (m)
   69. Indigo Bunting - 19 (18m,1f)
   70. Red-winged Blackbird - 67 (47m,15f,5 juveniles)
   71. Common Grackle - 35
   72. Brown-headed Cowbird - 12 (8m,3f,1 juvenile being fed by a male
   Northern Cardinal)
   73. Orchard Oriole - 7 (5m,2 immature m)
   74. Baltimore Oriole - 23 (22m,1f - 1 nest under construction in a
   sycamore tree)

   2. Stinkpot - 1  (New Reptile Species on Census - now at 8 Species since
   January 2010)
   3. Red-eared Turtle - 3
   4. Midland Painted Turtle - 50
   5. Eastern Spiny Softshell - 7
   6. Northern Water Snake - 1


IV. AMPHIBIANS: 2 SPECIES.

   1. Bullfrog - 5 (1 seen,4 heard)
   2. Green Frog - 42 (4 seen,38 heard)


V. FISHES: 6 SPECIES.

   1. Common Carp - 1
   2. Creek Chub - 9
   3. Common Shiner - 10  (First June Record on Census)
   4. Largemouth Bass - 2  (First June Record on Census)
   5. Bluegill - 15
   6. Pumpkinseed - 1


VI. BUTTERFLIES: 7 SPECIES.

   1. Eastern Tiger Swallowtail - 5 (females)
