SPECIES IN ALL CAPITAL LETTERS ARE REVIEW-LIST SPECIES. Details of
these sightings are desired by The Ohio Bird Records Committee. Careful
observation, not ornithological expertise, is the only qualification
for submitting your data. For details and pointers see:

ROSS'S GOOSE: Suzanne Wagner found one at Lakewood Park, Cuyahoga
County, on the 12th. It was relocated and reported as a Ross's Goose on
the 13th by Dan Sanders and Ben Warner. Craig Rieker also reported it
on the 13th and raised the question of possible hybridization with Snow
Goose. More reports, pictures and documentation are requested.

CACKLING GOOSE: Gabe Hostetler reported 2-3 from Maumee Bay State Park,
Lake County, on the 8th. Kenn Kaufman found one there on the 12th. Ryan
Steiner had 2-3 at Ottawa NWR, Ottawa County, on the 8th. Larry Roche
passed along word that some have been found recently moving around with
a mixed-species flock along Hartsville Road in the Hartsville -
Uniontown area of Stark County.

Red-throated Loon: Rick Asamato found one off Harveysburg Road
in Caesar's Creek SP, Warren County, on the 8th. It was
relocated there on the 11th. Emil Bacik found one at Headlands
Beach SP, Lake County, on the 9th. Photo at Rarebird.org.

Northern Goshawk: Tom Barlett reported an adult hunting the
environs of Springville Marsh State Nature Preserve in SW
Seneca County on the 8th.

Laughing/Franklin's Gull: The majority of the birders in Gabe
Hostetler's party at Lorain on the 8th thought a first-year
bird was a Laughing Gull. Gabe issued a minority opinion of
Franklin's Gull.

CALIFORNIA GULL: Chris Spagnoli identified one from E. 72nd St,
Cleveland, on the 8th. Phil Chaon saw it there the next day,
but found the gulls had moved out by the 12th. No reports
since.

Thayer's Gull: Ryan Steiner placed a qualified identification
of Thayer's Gull on a juvenile he found at Headlands Beach SP,
Lake County, on the 8th.

Iceland Gull: John Pogacnik reported one flying pass his North
Perry home, Lake County, on the 8th. Phil Chaon reported a
"kumliens-type" gull (intermediate between Thayer's Gull and
Iceland Gull) in a distant flock at E. 72nd St., Cleveland, on
the 9th.

Glaucous Gull: John Pogacnik reported one flying pass his North
Perry home, Lake County, on the 8th.

Black-legged Kittiwake: The Columbus Avid Birders group spotted
a first year bird at Lorain harbor on the 8th.

Purple Sandpiper: Brenda Baber spotted one along the beach near
the base of the breakwall at Headlands Beach SP, Lake County,
on the 8th. It was relocated on the 9th but not since.

Snowy Owl: The adult owl hanging around the Point Place
neighborhood of Toledo was seen by Michigan birders on the Lake
Erie ice off the end of 116th street on the 8th. It was likely
heard from 117th street on the 11th. Photos at Rarebird.org.

RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD: The adult female at a residence in the
Hartwell/Wyoming neighborhood of Cincinnati was most recently
reported on the 11th by Jeff Hays. The male visiting a heated
feeder in Bluffton, Allen County, remains through the 12th.
Pictures at Rarebird.org show the bird to have advanced into
more adult plumage since it's October arrival. Birders are
welcome. Linda Houshower, the homeowner, provided these
directions: Bluffton is off I-75, 18 miles north of Lima or
south of Findlay. Take either Bluffton exit, east on Main St.
to the Fire station on one corner, and East of Chicago on the
other corner, the street is Washington. Turn left (north), 3
stop signs (Jackson, Lawn, Spring), the house is a tall brown
with red roof on the right, where the street dead ends. Park on
the side of the street or at the dead end. Come up the sidewalk
towards the house, can't miss the feeders and activity.

Northern Shrike: The one first reported in November in Geauga
County was reported again on the 11th. It is south of Chagrin
Falls on Chagrin River Road near the power line easement about
1000 ft east of the Cuyahoga County line. In southern Wood
County, the one first reported on the 30th was seen on the 8th
and the 9th at Wood County Cricket Frog Cove Park on Freyman
Road west of Cygnet. Rita Schneider found one at Sandy Ridge
Reservation, Lorain County, on the 12th.

BOHEMIAN WAXWING: Bill Whan passed along word that one was
spotted near Rocky River Park, Cuyahoga County, on the 11th.
Two days later, Dan Sanders and Ben Warner found two in a flock
of Cedar Waxwings at the nearby Lakewood Cemetery.

PINE GROSBEAK: There was a positive report on the 8th by Gabe
Hostetler, no reports since then. The bird was seen at its
usual spot along Obee Road just east of its intersection with
Rt 295. This is just east of Oak Openings Metropark, Lucas
County. A metal gate on the north side of Obee Road and a sheep
pen on the south are good landmarks. Photos at Rarebird.org.

Red Crossbill: Wayne Wauligman reported a flock of 16 in the
campground at Winton Woods Park, Hamiliton County, on the 8th.
Later attempts could not relocate the birds.

White-winged Crossbill: John Pogacnik reported the one visiting
the feeders at his North Perry home, Lake County, returned
briefly on the 8th and the 9th. Photos at www.rarebird.org.

Common Redpoll: Widely distributed in the northern portion of
the state with reports this week from Oak Openings, Lucas
County; Cricket Frog Cove Park, Wood County; Black Swamp Bird
Observatory Nature Center, Ottawa County; Lakewood Cemetery and
Edgewater Park, Cuyahoga County; and a notable flock of 200 on
the 10th at Headlands Beach State Park, Lake County. Further
south they were reported from private feeders in Allen and
Wyandot Counties; and at the Wilmot Wilderness Center, Stark
County; Area G of the Delaware Wildlife Refuge, Delaware
County; and at the C. J. Brown Reservoir Visitor Center, Clark
County.
