I was hoping that we could find six raptor species on Wilderness Road just
south of Funk Bottoms Wildlife Refuge today. We saw three for sure -- a
pair of Red-tailed Hawks, two Rough-legged hawks, and a pair of Bald
Eagles. We **may** have also seen two others. A Northern Harrier has been
there other days and one may have appeared south of Wilderness Road, but
didn't stay in view long enough to be sure. And, just maybe, I might have
had a glimpse of the Turkey Vulture that has been frequenting the corner of
Wilderness Road and Elyria Road. The owner of the nearby house showed me
pictures. I saw a big black bird east of Elyria, but only got a glimpse.
The sixth species I thought we had a chance to find was an American Kestrel
-- we often see them on Wilderness Road, but with the cold and snow they
seem to have sought better habitat for voles. Three species makes a pretty
good morning of wintery birding.
