Dan Sanders wrote the following update and has asked me to post it to the listserv:

Hello All . . . As previously reported, a single, adult Yellow-crowned Night Heron was found/reported this afternoon by Ken Shepard at the Preston Road location in Bexley, OH where they had nested for the past 15+ years. Preston Road runs S off W Broad Street, just E of Wolf Park and Alum Creek (the waterway). We received word of this via a phone call from Bill Kinkead and soon after made the trip there from Westerville at about 6:00 PM. Fortunately, this Ohio rarity was still perched and preening in the same Sycamore tree where we had seen it about a year ago... most likely the same bird... and is once again seemingly 'alone', and has not brought back a mate, as we had hoped for. This is most likely a bird that nested/was hatched/fledged from this location in years past. The bird was seen again (same location) this evening at about 7:30 PM and flew toward Alum Creek (about 1/4 mile to the West) at about 8:30 PM, where it will likely be foraging for the night. This stretch of Alum Creek, along Wolfe Park, and also a park to the N of Broad Street, is another area where the bird may be found perching by day, if not at the Preston Road Sycamore tree location.

This previous nest location is at 211 Preston Road, just S of where Dale 'T's into Preston Road. Sycamore trees line the road here and this tree perch is directly in front of this address, along and above the W side of the roadway. It's the first tree S of the 211 driveway, on the W side of the road. The bird perches near the old nest location (now gone), about 2/3rds up in the tree and on mostly horizontal branches on the NE side of that tree. Look carefully as even this relatively large bird may not be seen at first. Also, keep checking back if you do not find it along Alum Creek as this is the most reliable place to see it. How long it may stay in the area is anybody's guess. Best of luck in re-locating this bird!

PS - Once you have located this tree on Preston Road, you can easily look for the bird from you car. Parking and walking along the roadway may be okay as the homeowners have been aware of this nest location (and birders) for many years, but be respectful of these private properties by staying on the roadway and not directing your optics toward their houses. Thanks.
