The Harris’s sparrow was at the feeder when I arrived around 1 p.m., today, Friday, Jan. 4. Shortly thereafter, the birds all flushed, and it had not come back by the time I left. This is at the Wood Duck blind feeder, at Pickerington Ponds Metropark southeast of Columbus. Wood Duck blind is off Bowen Road between Long Road (also called Abbey Trails Dr. further west) and Wright Road.

The long-tailed duck reported by Jackie Bain provided wonderful views – a beautiful adult male. It was seen from 2 p.m. until 2:30 when I left. Viewed best with a scope from the Walnut Boat Ramp off of Sunbury Road, north of the Hoover Reservoir dam, looking north toward the bridge. When I arrived, it was just beyond the round yellow buoy, but was diving regularly and working its way west (toward Sunbury Rd.) When I left, it was with a raft of hooded mergansers that were also actively diving, quite close to the west shore. Adding to the “white” mix were some ring-billed gulls resting on the water. Be patient and scan the area, because he moved quite a distance in the 30 minutes that I was watching.

Good birding,
Margaret Bowman
