Ed Schlabach (who I believe engineered the very first plan that discovered this species in this area years ago) found 3 Smith's Longspurs today in Mercer County. He had 2 bright males and a female (seemingly looking for water in the ditch)along with 75 Lapland Longspurs right by the road on Hill road north of Rockford West Road just south of the big S curve. He had another flock of 500 to 600 Lapland Longspurs near by. Ed also mentioned that on their way home, they passed but did not stop at a field that looked to him to be by far the best habitat for Smith's Longspur they had seen: a corn stubble field covered with more foxtail than they had seen in any other field. He recommended checking this field closely if you don't see them on Hill Rd. This other field is at the corner of Rt 33 and Erastus Durbin Rd.This is all near Rockford, OH.Kent Miller
