I was surprised when I went to the copy machine and looked out the window, a short-eared owl was sitting on the back deck railing next to our prairie planting behind our office (the house just north of the dam).  He was surprised, too and flew a few hundred feet to the north.   It was cool to be that close to it, probably only 6 feet away.
