I was not lucky enough to be with the group that saw the male Ruff in breeding plumage at Ottawa NWR yesterday, but I did have the opportunity to view some excellent photos of it at The Magee Boadwalk later in the day. This is definitely a different bird than my wife Denise and I saw at Big Island in Marion County, this past Tuesday. The male breeding plumage Ruff we saw had easily visible white on the back of the head, especially when in display, while yesterday's bird appeared to have a reddish color on the head and an overall darker look to it.

Bob Lane / Mahoning County
