An enthusiastic group of birders spent a beautiful morning/afternoon at the
open water at East 72nd Street - the warm water outflow from the power plant
created a narrow band of open water stretching east along the rocky (and
icy) break wall, which forced waterfowl and gulls to remain close to shore,
much to the delight of birders and photographers alike.

Sightings during the 3 hours we were there included redheads, canvasbacks,
greater and lesser scaup, buffleheads, goldeneyes, red-breasted mergansers,
white-winged scoter, Thayer's Gull, glaucous gull, greater black backed, and
perhaps others after we left around 2:30 pm. There were also 3 great blue
herons on the ice most of the afternoon.
