We had a Yellow Rail calling just before daylight at Big Island Marsh
Marion County. The marsh was filled with Soras, perhaps in the hundreds.
The bird began calling and continued for about 5-6 minutes and then
started up briefly about 20 minutes later. The Yellow Rail was in pool one
off of Larue Prospect RD near area headquarters. We were parked in the
second parking pull off and walked up the dike just to the left of the
lot, between pool one and two, east of the headquarters. About a quarter
mile to the right is a set of willows about 150 yards out. We were 70
yards east of that location in the marsh. I will be in the area again on
Thursday, driving a Silver-gray GMC Yukon. I know there are no guarantees,
but this is the best I can do on directions. I do think if the rails stay
thru the night, you could here the calling from the dike. There could have
been more than one bird as the second set of calls was some 75-100 yards
away from the first location. Do not know if it was the same or different
bird for sure. But the number of Soras was a bit staggering. We flushed no
less than 35 and they were calling all around us.
