We were out looking over the lake at Buck Creek State Park when I spotted a
small loon. It was very black and white. The face and neck were white with
the top of the head black and continuing down the back of the neck and onto
the back. There were also some Common Loons on the lake which looked much
larger. The bill on this bird was black and much smaller than the Common
Loons. It did not seem to have the upturned lower mandible of a Red-throated
Loon. We viewed the bird from the overlook below the Corps of Engineers
visitor's center on the west side of the lake just north of the northwest
end of the dam. We were looking to the northeast. The viewing conditions
were excellent with no heat waves even though the bird wasn't very close.

There were also quite a few Ruddy Ducks on the lake as well as several
Horned Grebes, a Pied-billed Grebe, and a few Lesser Scaup.
