I am thrilled with a 10-dollar app for iPhone I just bought -- it's called
Birdwatcher's Diary --- it feels a 20-year craving for an easier way to
log bird sightings.
Briefest summary possible: it lets you click on a species when you see
it, while you're looking at it, and automatically records where and when (the
iPhone uses GPS, some phones use cell phone tower triangulation). You can
see your sightings on the map.
I have uploaded a few of these records before I really knew how to use it,
but they give you the basic idea.
Less brief summary: using that information, you can output the data to
e-mail, Facebook, and to your computer (have to sync) to upload to e-Bird
(eventually will apparently be capable of direct upload from the phone itself
to ebird)
It's in the iPhone app store, and info about it is on their website:

I have absolutely no personal interest in the company, just thrilled that
for 10 bucks I have that much capability to log birds and then make lists
--- county, state, year, life, location lists.....
I'll stop there, but had to throw that in--
