Hi,

We worked the East Branch of the Chagrin River doing the Junco Residency
Study.  Holden biologist Mike Watson, had gone to a location upstream
yesterday afternoon and banded  2 new birds and one recapture from last
year.  (I had work meetings)

Today we were farther downstream.  On the east side we had one bird hit the
net repeatedly but never get caught.  He seemed to figure it out after
third bounce out and would not go for the decoy. We had two other birds who
seemed to be coming from across the river.

First we set up right next to the river and a bird came but just
countersang.  We crossed the river and set up on the west bank. Within 5
minutes we had a capture of an unbanded bird.  The river seems to be a
boundary.

In 2 days of field work we have banded 7 new birds and had 2 recaptures.
Last year we got 10 birds all season. We did get started much later last
year as it was our first year.  More banded birds means a bigger sample and
better chance of finding them if they stick around in the non breeding
season.

Additionally while working one location on the east side of the river I
heard a Blue-headed Vireo.  I was able to get on it with my binocular as it
moved along a branch and then into a nest!  First time in 11 years of doing
the Holden BBS that we have confirmed this species.
