I wanted to comment on two issues that have come up on our listserv.
Please do NOT reply to the list on these, but feel free to respond to me
directly.

First, we have received several spam posts in recent weeks. They all
appear to be the result of legitimate list members being the victim of
viruses which have been installed on their computers. There is no way we
can prevent messages like this from going out, short of moving to a
"moderated" list – i.e., having each post approved by an administrator
before it goes out to the list. And that's way more work than this
volunteer wants to take on.

The second issue is that you may have noticed that no posts went out
from late yesterday until early this afternoon, and that there was then
a small flood of posts. This was the result of our exceeding our limit
of 50 posts per day. Our list is hosted, FREE, by Miami University, and
this is a limit which their software imposes. When the limit was
exceeded, subsequent posts were blocked until I read my email this
afternoon, found out about the block, and cleared it. Looking at the
volume of posts from yesterday, most of them (with the exception of an
exchange about Audubon's birds on Google) were on topic. But we have
1,345 list members now, and during migration, that many people can
produce a lot of messages. I would just ask that, before posting your
message, please think about whether it will likely be interesting to a
large percentage of our members.
