Given the better weather, I decided to make another trip to funk bottoms. Had to deal with some wind and heat waves but still saw some good birds. Unfortunately, I did not see some of the more special birds recently reported like the Red Knot, Sanderling and Hudsonian Godwits. No one I spoke to had seen the Western SP.
I had nice looks at Ruddy Turnstones, lots of Semi-palmated SPs with some Leasts, Pectorals, Spotted and two Lesser Yellowlegs. Also had at least one White-rumped SP. Another birder said he had 2, possibly 3 White-rumped from where he was scoping. Semi-palmated Plovers, Killdeer.
The road to where the Hudson Godwits had been seen was pretty much dried out but I didn’t have much out there besides more Ruddy Turnstones and one extremely distant Black-bellied Plover. There was another large plover near it with less distinctive markings but at that distance, I don’t know if it was just a another black bellied in not quite full breeding plumage or possibly an American Golden-plover. I was at the very limit of scope viewing so impossible to know. I only picked them up because I was looking at some Sandhill Cranes. There were at least 15 to 20 sandhill cranes and another birder said he counted over 50.
Beautiful day to be out. I also heard wood ducks and saw at least one immature bald eagle & several great blue herons.
