I was in the field today monitoring a couple of sections of my Prothonotary Warbler nest box trail. The delightful weather seems to have brought the PROWs out in force. I worked an area that began with the Eastshore Yacht Club and continued north along the east shore almost to Area N in Galena. I rarely didn't hear a singing male PROW along the entire stretch. I located 18 males and 8 females along the route I followed. A check of nest boxes disclosed both eggs and hatchlings. Soon the next generation of PROWs will begin their odyssey.
As a side bonus I watched the Bald Eagles feed their hatchlings.
Several other observations of interest were 2 Red-headed Woodpeckers nest sites. The adults were brilliant in the sunlight. A juvenile (3rd yr?) Bald Eagle, Osprey, Wood Ducks, Great Crested Flycatchers, Scarlet Tanagers, Baltimore Orioles, Indigo Buntings and more. Natures Basket of Plenty.
