Late yesterday afternoon, at Evans Lake in eastern Mahoning County, we were treated to three species of grebe and three species of merganser. The grebe sightings were 2 Red-necked , 1 Horned, and 23 Pied-billed. The merganser sightings were 98 Hooded, 27 Common, and 7 Red-breasted. A total of 35 species of birds were seen in our driving loop around the lake. Over the years, in Spring and Fall, Evans Lake has hosted numerous rarities including Western Grebe, American White Pelican, Red-throated Loon, and Franklin's Gull, just to name some of the special visitors. Evans Lake is basically a little over two miles long and up to a half mile wide, with deep water at the north end. A spotting scope is pretty much necessary to see the birds on the lake. There are no public access sites, but viewing from the adjacent roads can be accomplished.
