Migration still seemed in stasis on my morning at this migrant trap north
of Columbus. I stopped at the beach & Visitors Center, the New Galena boat
ramp area, and the eastern portion of the dam. I wasn't alone - multiple
organizations were taking advantage of this last weekend of summer, with a
triathlon at the beach, and fishing and disc golf tournaments at New
Galena. Despite the crowds, birds were still around, just not many obvious
migrants. Included in the numbers were:
Osprey - singles were fishing off the beach and New Galena
BaldEagle - an immature was hanging around New Galena most of the morning
Gulls - despite the human use, nearly 300 Ring-bills were still around the
beach, along with 2 Herring Gulls
Flycatchers - Pewees still widespread, but also had Great Crested, Willow,
and E.Kingbirds
Swallows - the only obvious migrants, with small flocks of Barns & Cliffs
at every stop. No great numbers anywhere; possibly the stiff south wind
kept their numbers low.
Vireos - singing Warblings near the Visitors Center and at New Galena.
Red-eyed at the former.
Gnatcatchers - decent numbers for this 'warbler replacement'; New Galena
had 5-6.
Warblers - nothing around Alum Cr.Lk, but did have 1 Blackburnian at
Lazelle Woods nearby
Orioles - 1 Baltimore was along the trail at New Galena
