This years Common Merganser families can be found at four known locations, and possibly others, all adjacent to or near the Pennsylvania state line. As can be found in "The Second Atlas Of Breeding Birds In Ohio", the first accepted breeding confirmation was in the spring of 2001, in and by Columbiana County outdoorsman Jim Dolan, while kayaking on The North Fork of Little Beaver Creek. This June, no less than fourteen families were found along the tributaries of The Little Beaver Creek Wild and Scenic River in Columbiana County, no less than four along tributaries of Yellow Creek in Jefferson County, no less than three along Conneaut Creek in Ashtabula County, and no less than three along Grand River in Lake County. Being tree cavity nesters, along Little Beaver Creek, they favor nesting in the numerous large Sycamore trees along the rocky edges of the creek, sometimes in the exposed roots. To anyone finding a family unit, I would be interested in knowing the location. If you wish to share, send the location to "[log in to unmask]".
