I could not relocate the Snipe this late morning at Fernald - Lodge Pond,
Hamilton county. I figured it was still around. Maybe roosting. And sure
Enough, a fellow birder had it a couple hours later! I should have another
Chance before the end of July. It would be a July bird! The lodge pond
Looks good for some shorebirds to put down for a bit. Although another
Storm is coming through as I write. I had Solitary Sandpipers, Least
Sandpipers, etc. I didn’t have much time. Nothing like a committee
Meeting scheduled for mid day!
I hit Gilmore next - Butler County - for a July YC Night heron. Late afternoon,
Not dusk, I knew iffy, but wanted to try. I was scanning the swamps well,
Figuring it could be roosting. Nothing as I walked out, but as I walked back to
My car, an adult was walking around the swamp! Yea! July bird! Other birds
Of note there - well imho - Great Crested Flycatchers were calling. They
Have been quiet lately. Someday I will lug my scope in and scan the Corm
Nesting colony well. For neotropic.
Ode notes - nothing rare. Nice to see many Green Darners over the south
Pond at Gilmore. Many Widow Skimmers at the lodge pond - Fernald.
Good birding all. I am hoping to make 2 or 3 days up north on Lake Erie
Toward the end of July. Hopefully one of the two big rarities sticks….
