From early May and well into June I have had at least one pair of nighthawks in and around my yard in western Hamilton county. Our subdivision is surrounded by businesses with flat gravel rooftops. I have seen presumed males performing steep dives over these rooftops repeatedly, probably over an unseen female on the rooftop. They have been very vocal until recently. I have not heard one vocalize since June 24th but I did see a silent bird around 8:15 pm tonight (July 5th) flying around the neighborhood and over the businesses. Nighthawk breeding is difficult to confirm due to restricted access to rooftops owned by businesses. However, since we moved into this house 6.5 years ago they have been annual. In fact one summer I noted what appeared to be a family group of four flying over our house.

Subject: Common Nighthawks - Akron (Ellet)

Well, these little dudes were often heard out my window peenting at bedtime and sometimes waking me up in the wee hours of the morning. They have been conspicuously silent for several weeks...

  Any thoughts?
