At two different areas this weekend near Columbus I noticed late afternoon groups of Purple Martins. At Big Island on Saturday, a group of us saw a flock of 25-30 swirling over the marsh around 3:30, while on Sunday I had 12+ around Arrowhead Marsh at Pickerington Ponds. Recalling how marshes northeast of us (Presque Isle, Nimisila Lake) have huge roosts, is it possible that our man-made marshes have reached a point to be attractive to these birds? Has anyone else noted martin flocks around central Ohio wetlands the past few weeks?
